Sony PlayStation Networks and Microsoft Xbox Live experienced user connection problems on Christmas Day, 2014, for which a hacker group claimed responsibility. This time, hackers launched massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that overloaded the servers with bogus requests. DDOS is a specific type of DOS attack where multiple compromised systems, “Zombies”, which are usually infected with a Trojan, are used to target a single system causing a Denial of Service (DoS) attack.

Today, almost every computer arms anti-virus software, and the network equips firewalls. Why is it that there still exists that many “Zombies” around the world? There may be many reason, but the most critical one is related to threat detection technology. Traditional threat detection technology based on a virus database. Without a virus signature, the virus cannot be detected by a firewall and anti-virus software. Earlier this year, panda security released a report stating that 160,000 new malware samples were seen daily. That adds up to 16 million per year. No single antivirus company can write 6 million signatures per year. It is safe to say that traditional signature-based security is largely ineffective.

Hillstone Networks Intelligent Next-Generation Firewall addresses the challenges of today’s security solutions. IT detects and addresses hidden threats previous generation firewalls miss. The Abnormal Behavior Analysis offers a cutting-edge method of detecting unknown threats by analyzing user and server traffic, tracking a myriad of traffic parameters, and correlating and comparing the gathered data to limit risk and reveal potential new threats. In fact, we still maintain a traditional virus database. Thus, through signature detection and abnormal behavior analysis, Hillstone’s advanced threat detection protects clients from known and unknown threats. We empower our customers for a new age of threat intelligence.
